Time Alone

Deitrich Bonhoeffer said, “Let him who cannot be alone beware of community . . . . Let him who is not in community beware of being alone.” Spiritual disciplines are actions that we take to help us connect to God. They are more than attitudes or states of mind, they are actions. The discipline of solitude is the act of intentionally limiting our dependance on external stimulus to affirm our being. Choosing to log off of facebook, turn off the cell phone and the tv, and get away by yourself so you can hear more clearly the whisper of the divine in the world around you is a great spiritual discipline to experiment with this summer. Why not get out to camp and take the canoe for a long paddle to the far side of the lake where you can sit and pray without distraction. My experience has been that when I take

time to be away with God that I am far more able to fully engage in being a better spouse and parent and pastor. The best of community is experienced when balanced with the discipline of solitude. Have a great time away! See you when you get back! Darryl
