I just stumbled on a short video by the guys at Verge Network of a guy named Rodrick Gilbert, a church planting leader in North India. The movement he is a part of has grown to over 220,000 new followers since 1992 in 20,000 churches.
Rodrick talks about some of the “conditions” of discipleship. The time when Jesus says, “if your not read to ____ then you’re not ready to follow me.”
Check out the list.
I’ve got some questions on some of these. (Like what’s he saying here?)
I’d love to hear your thoughts on any of these “conditions”.
Ten conditions for disciples.Note the word “if” in the following statements of Jesus.
1. Cross-bearing
Matt 16 v 24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.
2. Self-denial
Matt 16 v 24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.
3. Supreme love for Christ
We are to love our families but always put love for Christ before that. Luke 14 v 26 “If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters—yes, even his own life—he cannot be my disciple.
4. Forsaking all
5. No turning back
Luke 9 v 62 Jesus replied, “No one who puts his hand to the plough and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”
6. Being steadfast in the Word
John 8 v 31 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples”
7. Loving one another
John 13 v 35 “By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
8. Fruitfulness
John 15 v 8 This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.
9. Dead bury their dead
Luke 9 v 60 Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”
10. Follow Christ with no material expectations
Luke 9 v 57-58 As they were walking along the road, a man said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.” Jesus replied, “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.”
What do you think? Are there any he forgot?
